About SteveBorn and bred in Darwin, Steve Erdelyi started his manufacturing jewellery apprenticeship in 1984 at aged 17 with The Jewellers Workshop. As the Territory's only apprentice jeweller at the time, Steve travelled to Melbourne every three months for four years to complete the formal training components of his apprenticeship.
Steve continued working for The Jewellers Workshop before being commissioned to make the Ramford Collection, a limited edition collection of handmade jewellery made with natural form gold nuggets. The collection consisted of 1000 unique pieces and took Steve over two years to create. Throughout the 90's Steve contracted to various retail jewellers, up to 14 different jewellery stores at one point, designing and manufacturing their stock and performing repairs. In the late 90's Steve returned to contracting for The Jewellers Workshop in the Smith St Mall before taking over the workshop lease himself in the early 2000's. He worked in the old Boarding House until the building was demolished 5 years ago. In recent years, Steve chooses to meet his customers over a coffee and performs all of his jewellery work at his home-based workshop. Not having a shopfront means he doesn't have overheads to pass on to the customer - he can go fishing as often as he likes as well! |
